The moment I met Alyssa for our first wedding meeting I knew I was going to love working with her and Marc. Our first meeting was supposed to last about an hour, but lasted close to two and felt like catching up with an old friend. As she described what she envisioned for their day I knew they were meant to my clients, and I’m so glad they choose me to capture their day!
On the day of their wedding, it was such a gorgeous day in Downtown Detroit. Their ceremony was held at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, one of my all-time favorite churches in Detroit. For those that have never been, it is a gorgeous church with beautiful architecture and old-world charm.
One of my personal favorite moments of the night was hearing Marc tell his mom how much he loved her and how beautiful she was during their first dance. I admit being a new boy mom, it was a moment that melts my heart and also made me tear up behind the lens. You know it’s a good wedding when the photographer starts crying behind the lens!
I love to ask my clients after their day what they loved most about it and share why they choose the venues and vendors they did. So here are some of their why’s behind the day.
Why did you guys choose to get married in Detroit? Gem Theatre, and Most Blessed Sacrament.
We chose to get married in Detroit at The Gem Theatre because we wanted a unique and historic venue. When we walked into the Gem for the first time, we knew it was going to be a perfect day. We wanted our family and friends to experience the beauty of Detroit and some of the changes it’s made in the past decade. Marc and I both grew up Catholic and it was important for us to get married in the church. The Most Blessed Sacrament has a particularly special meaning to us. My grandmother grew up in Detroit and attended Blessed Sacrament for school as a young girl. She went to church there every Sunday with her family and eventually my mother and her siblings also attended church there. My grandmother is 92 and has a very special place in mine and Marc‘s heart. We were so happy to have her there with us and knew it would be an extra special day for her to see the church again and some of its beautiful renovations. Not to mention, it has the most beautiful architecture inside and out! Marc and I felt like it was the perfect place to recite our vows to each other.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?
While it is hard to choose one we would have to say it is tied between seeing each other at the altar for the first time and our very last dance at The Gem. At the end of the night, the dance floor was filled with our closest family and friends and everyone circled up around us. It was such a special feeling to have all of our favorite people in one room together with us.
Any advice to newly engaged couples? Take your time and stay focused on what both of you want for your special day! The most important thing to remember is the love you share and the foundation of your marriage. Don’t sweat the small stuff because people won’t even notice!
Did you Honeymoon? If so, where? We honeymooned in Greece (Athens, Mykonos and Santorini). It was the best honeymoon. We got to relax on the beaches, but also explore the beauty of the islands and the history of Athens. We highly recommend going there!
